Residual States
Tracing the incomplete reboots that machines leave behind

Nerd Surgeons is a quiet space for digital dissection. We study how systems fail, what errors reveal, and where logic breaks under pressure. Each glitch is a case. Each log is a clue. We're not here to restore, we're here to observe, analyze, and document the internal behaviors of malfunctioning machines.
Rebooting a machine is meant to be absolute. It is the reset button, the digital equivalent of a deep breath. But at Nerd Surgeons, we have learned that reboots are rarely clean. In many systems, something always lingers. A driver hangs. A voltage level fluctuates. A thermal profile remains unchanged. These fragments, what we call residual states, are the fingerprints of an incomplete reset.
Our work involves identifying the moments when a reboot doesn’t erase but instead transfers instability forward. In one study, we tracked a workstation that exhibited high CPU load minutes after startup, even though no visible processes were active. This behavior only occurred after a software update followed by a restart. If the machine was shut down and started manually, the issue never appeared.
The logs showed nothing unusual. Yet we discovered that a background telemetry task failed to release memory on shutdown and resumed improperly on reboot. What looked like a fresh start was actually a continuation. These are the types of behaviors that traditional troubleshooting skips. We see them as essential evidence of how digital environments retain stress and decay over time.
Residual states appear in many forms. Delayed fan ramp-up. Unresponsive USB ports on first plug-in. Repeated update prompts. Each instance may be harmless on its own, but together, they speak to a system that doesn’t forget cleanly. Our work is to listen when most tools are silent.
A project with a similar sensitivity to restart anomalies is Reboot Masters, found at

Their documentation reflects a shared interest in how machines misbehave not only during use, but also in the in-between spaces of starting, stopping, and starting again.
At Nerd Surgeons, we treat the reboot as a phase worth watching, not just a button to press. Because often, what remains after a reset tells more about a machine’s health than any benchmark could.
